I've been very absent from this forum for a long time now which I regret hugely, I miss it!
My collecting habits have changed a lot in the last few years and while I still absolutely adore my Julips, I haven't bought any outside of a show spare in years, and obviously the last couple of years they haven't been a thing, but somehow last year I acquired a couple of new Julips from friends!
I turned 32 back in November and I wasn’t expecting to get anything; my parents had already bought me some clothes for a friend's wedding, and a wee bag of chocolate, socks and the by now obligatory jar of caramelised onion chutney. (😂) So, imagine my surprise when I came downstairs that morning to a big box from a very familiar address! Turns out some of my very best friends had clubbed together to buy me a birthday pony! 😭❤️ (Tom, Heather and Magda, you're the actual best <3)
Julip people really are the best people. ❤️❤️
He’s been a very good Julip and told me his name very early on, so I’d like you all to meet EAE Talisker!

He’s the Julip Heavy Horse mould, something I’ve been quietly ogling from afar ever since its introduction, and this is one of the colours I’d always planned on ordering, after a photo I found a while back of a Clydesdale mare fully clipped out. As soon as I unwrapped him I knew that was it as I'd shown said friends the picture and gushed about how great it would look on a Julip, having no idea I'd be holding that very Julip a few months later! The real horse is a very bold bay sabino, but the Julip version definitely looks a little more roan, though Laura did a fantastic job capturing all the different shades!
I added in a couple of belly spots as I’m pretty sure the reference horse had a lot more white but it got a little lost amongst all the sabinoey roaning. 😂 I might give him some foot floof but I haven’t decided yet…
He had the most beautiful mane and I really did love it, all soft and full of colour variation...but the reference horse was hogged and well, I couldn't resist giving him a matching haircut! I kept the mohair in my stash so I'll definitely use it on another model one day!

He also got a rug and headcollar after he'd been here a week or two, meaning that other than the most recent Julip you'll learn about in a moment, all 70+ of my Originals now have a headcollar and rug each!

For a laugh I paired him up with Kirkby, the smallest of my ponies. XD

Finally, my most unexpected of horses!
In mid December, I came downstairs to find a box in the post. I hadn't ordered anything, so I had no idea what to expect when I opened it up. When I did, the first words out of my mouth were 'oh no, you didn't?!' because I knew instantly who had sent him.

Two of my very best pals (one of whom was also partially responsible for Talisker!)very kindly bought me this very poorly vintage Julip off a Julip group on Facebook! Tom had casually mentioned seeing him for sale in one of our group chats, and honestly, I can't even remember what I said about it at the time! Probably something about it being a real project for whoever ended up with him, not thinking for a moment that person would be me! I've never had a vintage before, and certainly not one who needs this much help, so thanks guys, you really know how to give me a challenge! 😂😂
He’s incredibly squishy as the latex has gone the consistency of a fine Brie over time, so restoration might have to be fairly extreme. He’s the old Arab Stallion mould from the 1970s, and someone has obviously tried to repair him in the past as his front legs are mostly milliput, but that hasn’t helped much and the rest of his body is very very soft and sticky in places. His shoulders and belly are the worst, and while his head and neck look fine, they feel like a fairly solid marshmallow. 😂 He has a super sweet face though, and I really hope I can do him justice! I think I’ll have to use Heather's technique of completely encasing him in a layer of epoxy clay as I think any repairs I do would only slow his inevitable deterioration and I’d end up with some solid areas with gooey bits right next to them as the latex aged. I'm also toying with the idea of stripping back the worst parts and adding on fresh latex, but we'll see.
For that reason I think I'm going to call him Theseus, as by the time I’m done with him, like the thought experiment’s ship bearing his name, who knows how much of the original will remain once I’m done with him! 😅

He also came with a travelling companion, another long sought after Julip, a hedgehog! Seeing as Talisker is a kind of whisky, and he’s only a wee thing, he’s been dubbed Dram. 😆
I love them all so much for being such lovely Julips, but even more so for the friends who gifted them to me. I love you guys. <3
