I was asked if I could do some rehairing for a fellow Julip collector recently in exchange for one of her Julips. I chose the catalogue model 'Buttons' as I love the Family Horse mould and really fancied doing a little bit of customising to make it really interesting which she said was alright as she hadn't ever really clicked with him. Sans hair, this is how he arrived... Freckles (before) by Elrenia_Greenleaf, on Flickr I only intended to do a little bit of repainting, to turn him or her into a varnish roan appaloosa like this but, as ever, I got a little carried away. Sooo, everyone meet Freckles, the very orange Appaloosa mare! Freckles by Elrenia_Greenleaf, on Flickr Freckles by Elrenia_Greenleaf, on Flickr Freckles by Elrenia_Greenleaf, on Flickr Freckles by Elrenia_Greenleaf, on Flickr Freckles by Elrenia_Greenleaf, on Flickr Freckles by Elrenia_Greenleaf, on Flickr I used the Games Workshop 'Citadel' paints and redid her eyes, as I felt the original ones were a little emotionless. She also got a nice new headcollar made especially for her, using some fancy ribbon I've been putting off using for ages as it frays something terrible. XD Normally I wouldn't want to show off what I've got in exchange until my half of the trade has been sent off but as I'm waiting on some more mohair arriving and she was begging to be shown off, I couldn't resist. XD

cor, very eyecatching! it's funny how paintjobs can actually affect how the mould shape looks, i don't know if it's the pale belly and bright points or the shorter hair but it looks like she's gained weight since the paintjob somehow! lovely job though.

Haha, yeah, I was thinking that too; her neck looks a lot shorter now as well! Either she's just got a bit of a grass belly or she's in foal. XD

i imagine her being the pony everyone at the yard wants to ride because they're so unusual looking, then you get on board and it's another greedy pony determined to stick its head down to graze despite your best efforts!

Yes! Very shiny and eye catching but not quite as good a ride as you were hoping, lol. I'm hoping to make her a western tack set as I think she'd really suit one.

oh god yeah, that'd look great. you'd have to do a little cowboy rider for her as well... you know, stetson and full chaps kind of thing. (is there a matt smith doctor figure with a stetson...?) i'd love to see you take on a western tack set though (unless you've done one before in my absence in which case sorry and... pics?)

There is actually! I only have the basic version though. (He's going to be EAE's new vet, lol) I'm really miffed though as the new wave of figures are a completely different scale, more suited for Schleichs or something. I made one once but it was so awful I took it apart and never showed anyone, lol

oh that's annoying. i found a couple of davids when i was sorting through all my model related junk and deciding what to keep in the house move. hoping to get my act together and get properly back into the hobby when i go home and unbox everything again. i bet it wasn't that bad (i'm apprehensively trying what used to come out as the smiley i want to use, i bet it's hideously neon and different looking now)

Looks like a completely different horse! Very nice painting, do you have a tutorial? And how do you get your short manes to stick down!? Mine for the life won't and just like to poke up even with water and combing.

Oops, yes, he was a Minstrel wasn't he? XD (and no, she's all miiiine now. ) No tutorial I'm afraid! I just used a bit of washing up sponge and dabbed on the paint layer by layer in very thin coats, then painted on the spots and eyes with a brush. As far as the hair is concerned though, I just dampened it down with enough water that it would stick to the neck, (like, really saturated, almost dripping wet) brushed it through with a toothbrush and let it dry overnight. Once dry it will still be sort of stuck to the neck so I brush through it again, then cut it and repeat with the water. I usually run a little bit of conditioner through it on the first wash but as I'd done so much repainting, I didn't want to risk it in case it interfered with the paint. I think the trick is to make sure you dampen down the underside of the hair thoroughly or it will stick up all over the place.

Oh wow, she looks incredible! The gingery-roanyness* really suits her and lifts a very basic paintjob to something far more interesting. And the hairing is perfect as always.
*totally a word.

I still find it hilarious that out of all the arty/crafty things I do with my Julips, it's the hairing that I seem to be best at - I never do anything with my own hair beyond brushing it and tying it back in a ponytail, I'm useless at braids and out of all my childhood friends am probably one of the few who didn't ever consider hairdressing as a future career so I'm not really sure where this skill has come from!

What a transformation! Great detailing in the color. You should totally make a Western set so that you can then tell me how to do it.

LOL, I somehow think it'll be a while before I'm good enough to pass on knowledge - western saddles are so much more complicated to make than what I'm used to!
