I was wondering if this happened to anyone else who had a website on free webs, or webs as it is called now? I lost my general model pony 'yardhand' site and the Mumbleswan Equestrian one with the Julips. I can log in to webs but I can't see what the offending material ('in violation of their terms of service') they mentioned in the email could be… hmmm

I had the same problem with my non Julip site but have no idea what caused it!

I thought they stopped offering free web hosting and took all the sites down because of that? My old site just says it's no longer available, although it used to reappear randomly sometimes.

Thanks guys! I remember your Moonacre site Kits I guess I'll just have to make a new one then... Wix and Squarespace look like good free platforms.

Thanks guys! I remember your Moonacre site Kits I guess I'll just have to make a new one then... Wix and Squarespace look like good free platforms. Something to think about if you're looking at Wix - you can't backup your site. I haven't tried Squarespace, but I left Wix wanting to set something on fire. It's a nifty little site, but finicky in some areas, an unsuited to my way of working. I was trying to edit something on on the site and there was an error in saving that corrupted multiple pages on my site. I was already a little :/ , but that incident and not being able to have a simple backup put me over the edge. It's not too difficult to learn to build your own basic site, if I can do it, anyone can. If you want to go that route, I suggest using Notepad++ to write your site off-line and then just upload to whatever host you go with. It's easy, you have a back-up at all times, you can un-do anything, and you can quickly view any changes just by opening the file in your web browser and hitting refresh after a save. N++ is freeware and is pure awesome. Among its many features, you can open multiple (I've had over 100 open at once) files in tabs, do "replace in all open documents" (important if, like me, you change your mind about layout every few months), highlight your opening and closing tags so it's easy to spot issues, and it has a spell-check. These are just the features I use the most, and is just skimming the surface; the more experienced would get much more out of the program than I do.

I didn't know about a lack of backups on Wix, that's annoying. :/ I'm already most of the way through making a new EAE one on there though so I'll probably just keep a word doc with all the text somewhere as I've got the photos backed up elsewhere. XD

There's also Weebly, I'm using it - and it has a backup option, as far as I'm aware!

Thanks CFH - well Notepad++ does sound awesome from what you've said but my knowledge of html is pretty sketchy - it would be a very long project! Do you have a link to your site if it's finished? I do love the home-made style ones, pretty refreshing compared to the same generic templates over and over... I'll check out weebly too, thanks Silver

It's been a bit of a long haul learning it myself, but they do have great tutorials these days. I use google *a lot* when I'm working The new template sites are awesome, but back in the 90s when I made my first site, you could use their plug n play templates, but then you could go into the editing mode where you could see and edit the actual code. It was a great way to start learning HTML and it's a shame you can't do that now. Lab Rat Tango used to be my website, but now it's just the home page for my various projects. The design isn't anything groundbreaking, but it works for me and is java-free, so it (should) load quickly and cleanly for just about anyone.

I also use Weebly for both my Skylark Stables and my Barvil Guinea pigs and for a numpty with anything pc I find it rather easy to do. Have a few hic-ups but that is down to me more than the site

Do either Weebly or Wix have a limit on how much webspace you get? I have a ridiculous amount of model horses (well over a thousand) so obviously I'd need to have a lot of photo on there, and wouldn't want to start uploading pictures and making pages only to find I run out of space part way through and it was all wasted effort cos I can't fit the whole collection on it. On my old Geocities one, I got round the problem of a size limit by uploading small thumbnails to save on webspace and having each one linked to its full size version hosted on photobucket, so clicking each one got you a new tab with the big photo, but I don't know if the site-builder/templatey things like Wix and Weebly use, would have an option to add a URL to each image you put on there - I don't want the bother of signing up and starting to make one if it'll turn out I can't actually show all my horses on it

I have found I am not very computer literate! I want to be able to do that at some point to link to each horses pedigree. That is the reason I moved to Weebly, Webs allowed me about 20 photos and then told me I had to pay for adding more, so I just moved on. Good thing now if it's deleting or freezing all the sites!

Wix definitely lets you link to things - I think most hosts will these days.

AFAIK free Weebly website can now have unlimited number of pages. I think there's only a limit per one file size (don't remember what it is exactly), still allowing you to add pretty big and good quality pictures. You can link image from external source, but it will be copied to Weebly anyway - I'm not a fan of this solution, but I can cope with that. Here are some Weebly drawback listed: www.webnots.com/drawbacks-of-weebly/I'm hoping to find some other hosting eventually, for now I'll stick to Weebly anyway (And good ol' Blogger for my blog!)
