It was just another day at Meadow Valley stables, and Madigan was waiting patiently for his morning ride. Violet was busy in the tack room so she was a little later than usual. Madigan was just about to go back to his haynet when Violet appeared.
"Hey Lad" she said. "Ready for a ride? I'd thought we'd practise some jumping. But first....grooming!" Madigan whinned. He loved being groomed before, and after a ride. Violet pulled back the bolt and entered the stable. She took a leadrope out of her pocket and attached it to his headcollar. She lead him out into the sunny yard. Cindy the dog had come out of the tackroom and joined horse and rider in the yard. "There boy, easy does it...." As Madigan stepped onto the cobbled yard, something colourful and flappy shot underneath Madigan's nose. A pheasant. Madigan decided he didn't like phesants and spooked. He refused to walk any futher. "Oh come on boy! Its just a silly phesant!" But Madigan had decided that he wasn't going to go any further, that flappy thing was going to eat him alive! Just then another pheasnt fluttered down from the roof and landed. On Madigans rump. He bucked and reared, trying to dislodge the evil being on his back. Surpried, the bird flew away, over the field. Madigan calmed down. "Oh Mads. What am I going to do with you?" Violet sighed. "I'll ride you later, when you've calmed down" she'd decided. Leading him back into the stable she sighed to herself. Typical Thoroughbred she tutted. Nevermind she loved her chestnut neigh no matter how wimpish he may be at times. She left him to his haynet. She busied her self with yard work then came back to check on him. "OH MADIGAN!!"
