Over in the FB group we're having a Julip Advent Calendar. I've volunteered to post those pictures here to save folks the bother of extra uploads. We hope you all enjoy the pictures and have a happy holidays.
** December 1st - By Farfrae Farm ** Twas the week after Thanksgiving and all through the house Were fragments of tinsel and folks starting to grouse
The tree was half-garnished with baubles of glass Throw on some lights and it will all look first class
The cats were watching all smug from their spots While the lights were untangled from their tight festive knots
Christmas tree cupcakes and hot chocolate, too will not be enough to see this season through

** December 11th by Samantha ** The most exciting time at Christmas for the Julip foals is decoration of the Advent Tree with the Advent Animal baubles, helped by Mrs Allsorts. Inquisitive is terribly excited because today his box contains the carrot for Rudolf! But watch out Inquisitive, can’t you see, the Advent Mouse has escaped from its box and is about to nibble the carrot !!

** December 14th by Dani H. ** Remembering an Old Tradition “Dad,” little Merlin ventured, his voice laced with curiosity. “Why do some humans decorate trees with fruit at Christmas, when there’s so many sparkly things they could use instead?” Harry peered down at his son and smiled. “It’s an ancient tradition, my boy,” he explained. “Christmas falls in the heart of winter, very close to the shortest day, which is the Winter Solstice. Humans don’t have big warm coats like we do, so they build fires. But, the firewood needs to be kept dry, or it won’t burn. So, they would bring trees into their homes to dry out, and decorate them with fruits and berries as offerings to thank the tree spirits for the wood.” Merlin snorted. “Tree spirits? Surely there’s no such thing!” His dad must be pulling his leg again. Just then, the evergreen they had been standing beside rustled, and two little round faces with large dark eyes peeped out of the branches. Merlin spooked so far backwards that he sat down in surprise - which was rather cold, since they were standing in a snow drift! Harry chuckled. “What did I tell you?” Merlin stared at the tree warily, and shook his head when he realised that it was in fact two guinea pigs looking back at him - and not, as he had first thought, these so-called tree spirits. Although why he was so frightened when spirits certainly weren’t real he didn’t know. “I thought they might be the spirits!” he exclaimed indignantly as his father laughed. “But how do you know we’re not?” piped up a little voice from the tree. “Have you ever seen a tree spirit before?” Merlin could swear he saw a small white bird smile knowingly to itself as it pottered about beneath the evergreen, and he was sure he would spend the rest of winter (and maybe every winter to come) wondering if there really was such a thing as tree spirits… or whether those fluffy little critters were just naughty little piglets after all. Happy Winter Solstice, all!

** December 16th by Amanda D. ** In Icelandic folk-law the 16th of December is the day when the 5th 'Yule lad' called Pottaskefill or Potlicker arrives in your house to eat the left overs from the cooking pots. If you leave your shoes out on the windowsill, Pottaskefill will leave you a gift in them if you have been good, or a potato if you have been bad.
It is best to be good in Iceland or The Yule Lad's giantess mother Gryla* will carry you away in a sack to her cave in the mountains and eat you in a stew!** There are 13 Yule Lads who visit on the 13 days before Christmas. Pottaskefill arrives on the 16th of December and leaves on the 29th. Meanwhile, at Havillands, Gareth -who is trying to cook dinner -is having trouble with a Pottaskefill of his own! Rocky has managed to push the kitchen window open wide enough to get his big head in, and is busy sampling the contents of the saucepan on the stove with his tongue! Who knew that horses liked custard? ****** I made the corner of the kitchen myself out of cardboard boxes, paper, foil and printables from the internet. The props are a bit big but all my 1/12 scale house stuff is packed away and I only had 1/6 scale things to hand, so excuse the discrepancy, either that or there are Great Auk eggs in that box. *Gryla owns the giant Yule Cat who will also eat you if you don't get new clothes for Christmas. **This beats Elf On The Shelf hands down, children need a **lot **more terror in their lives, it does them good.

** December 18th by Jane P. ** After a boozy sherry and nibbles in the tack room, the staff and some of the owners staggered out into the yard for the ubiquitous Christmas card picture and everyone at Marchwood sends their seasons greetings and wishes for a happy new year.
