I found my old tutorial pics from the previous j-club and thought they might be helpful to include on here as well
To make brushes for your grooming kit like this :
you will need :
a lollystick - the straight variety need less cutting, but the roundy ones like in magnums and soleros can be trimmed down too. If you don't eat lollies, you can buy a pack of clean new sticks from shops which sell cookery accessories.
garden secateurs, or strong scissors, for cutting the lollystick. Or a parent if you're worried you might lose a finger instead.
A piece of sandpaper, nail file or emery board, for sanding
Felt
Glue - I use superglue gel but other strong types of craft/DIY glue will work too and smell less
Ribbon or piece of leather/fake leather for the strap
optional - paint and clear nail varnish
Snip a bit off your lollystick. If you ate the lolly, give it a wash first or you'll make a sticky body brush
snip it into roughly the shape you want your brush to be - they vary from pointed like this one, to a lot more round - to do a round one, you can leave the original curved end of the lollystick and just trim the other end to match
using the sandpaper or nail file, file away at the cut edges til it's all lovely and smooth and just the shape you want it. Round off the top edge of the brush, so it's comfortable in your rider's hand
once you've gone all round the top, it should look like this :
At this point, you can add paint and/or varnish, to make it look dirty, like darker coloured wood, and shiny. You could even paint it black or blue or pink with spots on!
I painted and varnished this one :
Leave it to dry well, while you get the other part ready
Cut a narrow strip of felt off the edge of the sheet
This brush is going to be black and navy, so I cut matching strips :
(I should have done black and white, in the photos they look the same colour! lol)
Roll up your first colour, once you've made a big enough blob, snip off the end and fasten it with a dot of glue
Apply some glue to the underneath of the brush - NOT the side you filed and varnished
Press the roll of felt into the glue, and squeeze it down hard. If you're making the brush all one colour, you need to make the roll bigger, so it goes right to the edges, but if you're doing two colours you need a gap all round it like this
Apply a little bit of glue along the cut edge of your second colour felt, then stick it round the edge of the first colour
Glue one end of the ribbon strap to the side of the brush
Cut the ribbon to length, leaving space for the rider's hand, add a bit of glue on the end and stick it to the other side
The finished thing :
Curry combs can be made from thickish silver wrapping paper, with pins for the 'neck' bit, and bits snipped off kebab skewers for the handles
These get a badly drawn tutorial sheet :
