I branched out from headcollars this weekend and made two bridles I've had a sort of fear of trying to make anything out of leather or faux leather, lol, but it seemed to go okay. The first was for Pendragon, my new hunter: (At first I tried to reduce the number of buckles to make it less bulky but it just didn't look right.)The second was for Momma Spot (she still doesn't have a proper name and before we named our cat who had kittens, we just called her Momma Cat, so the little Mustang is stuck with the name just because she's unnamed and has a baby): I made this one without a noseband because there was a chance I'd die of frustration doing another one so soon and I've noticed the bit ring is pretty high up her cheek, oops! I'm happy with how they went for my first attempt into cutting up fake leather and making it into bridles but if you could point out the obvious improvements to be made, I'd really appreciate it! I do feel like the browbands/headpieces are too close to the ears but I'm not sure how to fix that. And keepers... I just can't do keepers. Help! Ooh and finally - does anywhere make really tiny buckles?? These are 1/12th from Chestnut Ridge I think (they've been in the drawer a while) but I feel like they're a bit big on the hunter and definitely too big on the Mustang and throatlashes. I've seen these www.chestnutridge.co.uk/product/Tiny_Buckle_Fret_1001209052014 but I can't really tell how they'd look as there are no measurements. Thank you

They look really good and very neat! The smallest buckles I've managed to get my hands on are 1/16" - most of mine came from Rio Rondo but I've also bought some from the Little Trimmings website. It looks like the browband needs to be just a little bit longer, then the headpiece will sit slightly further away from the ears.

Really smart, I especially like Pendragon's The reins hang very naturally as well, I find mine are always a bit all over the place!

Thank you for the nice comments They look really good and very neat! It looks like the browband needs to be just a little bit longer, then the headpiece will sit slightly further away from the ears. I was hoping you'd point me in the right direction haha that sounds like a really good point, I'll make sure I leave more length on the browband for the next one. I'd not heard of Little Trimmings either and had sort of forgotten Rio Rondo so will get shopping! Josie, I think Pendragon's reins hang better than Momma Spot's because I actually put a buckle in them - I was running low on buckles and didn't give her one and her reins are more unwieldy as a result! I guess I could just cut and glue hers to make a little fold.

Browbands are always tricky, you either end up with too much so it sticks out in front and looks silly, or not enough and it's a tight fit about the ears. Making the cheekpiece buckles sit a little lower down ('level with the eye' was always the statement for the correct height in old horse books) also gives you a bit of space to bring the browband lower down the forehead to give a bit more room round the base of the ears. I find real horses' bridles often seem to come with too tight a browband, though - Dusty's Cob size one is a squeeze at 14.2hh when most cobs are bigger, and the foal has to wear a Full sized one despite only being 13.3!

I forgot to mention Solstice Sky Studio too - they do all sorts of sizes of buckle, including the tiny ones. They come in frets of 20 or 30 but can be bought in singles aswell. They also do headcollar fittings. SSS are on fb (contact via pm to order) but I think they also have a website.

I had the same with my cob mare, Bramble...she had to have a ridiculously pretty velvet one because it was the only one big enough in the second hand basket (I could never afford/refused to pay the extortionate price for the fancy new ones in our tack shop!) which means I'll have my work cut out when my portrait of her arrives to make a tiny replica of it

Kits, where did you get the leather? It looks really manageable and realistic!

Hahah, yeah, I'm a bargain-bucket-scavenger when it comes to real horse tack, too - Bonnie's bridle was in the second-hand-bridle-parts box cos it was missing it's noseband (I don't often use those anyway), her reins were from there too, Foal's bridle was a really fancy Stubben one but I got it for a tenner by rummaging at a tack sale, her breaking roller was a vintage 1960s one off ebay for a fraction of the price of a new one, her saddle was in a junk shop, and Dusty's saddle came from the rubbish tip where it was going to be chucked in the compactor if no-one wanted it!
