My most recent custom is a Julip HOTY pony to bay. He arrived in a rather sorry state with matted hair, big seam lines, warped legs and scratches all over his body.
He has been repainted with Games Workshop paints and rehaired in black mohair. You might recognise him as the "chocolate horse" from my Easter post - he got turned into a real horse at last

Thank you No EG he doesn't have a name yet, I think he looks like a nice sensible riding school pony (maybe a bit stubborn too) but I've not known a bay one who fits the bill to name him after.

wow, loads of depth to that colour. love the reins - reminds me of the horrible rubber ones all the tiny ponies had at my yard that looked brilliant but were a pain to actually use

Aww, the little snip is precious. Sensible but a little stubborn riding pony sounds perfect.

Thank you! Yes his reins are copied from the ones I learned to ride using, I even checked the Robinsons catalogue to make sure I got the colours in the right order haha. I was always getting told "hold the RED bits"

Thank you Georgie has one she filled the mouth in on (I think he's hers, I saw him in the Model Horse Love CTF photoshow album), I think that looks good too but I'm a bit scared of resculpting things.

He looks lovely, I have a couple of faded HOTYs that I would like to paint. Looking at games workshop paints - is it the base paints you use and does it need any sort of sealer to protect it? Not sure how I would get the shading on.

Not sure how I would get the shading on. Thank you I just use whichever paints are in the colours I want! I use their "Purity Seal" when I'm doing pastel work but don't tend to seal painted horses, although some people do choose to. And I got a tiny pot of the Games Workshop gloss varnish for hooves, eyes etc. For shading my technique has always been to use an almost dry brush with the tiniest bit of paint on it to add darker layers on but maybe try YouTube for tutorials? Trial and error is a good bet though, you can always give your models a quick sand and try again

Thanks very much for that, I think a trip to Games workshop is in order! I wasn't sure if the paint would last without some sort of varnish on top but then I don't want to end up with a horse whos too shiny.

Thats true but the one at Games Workshop says satin so I wasn't sure how much shine it would have. I will upload pictures when they are finished, one is Bay beauty that had gone more pinky pale brown and the other is the palomino anniversary model who seems to be two shades now and has a greeny tinge in places.
