I would like to introduce you to the Little Yellow Duck Project as I know that a lot of you on here are involved in crafts other than the model horses.
The idea of the project is to highlight the need for blood and bone marrow donors and to remind people of the existence of the organ donor register. I got involved because my former riding instructor/livery yard owner was diagnosed with non Hodgkinson's lymphoma and was very lucky to get a stranger-donated bone marrow transplant.
The Little Yellow Duck Project can best described as a cross between random acts of kindness, secret santa and a bit of a treasure hunt. Little handmade ducks are made by anyone who wants to join in, have a special label attached and are left in public places for people to find and keep. On the label is the website address and finders are invited to visit the website to find out what the LYD project is all about. They can also pin their duck on the map - the duckmakers do check to see if their ducks have been adopted and rehomed.
It only begun in April but over 600 ducks have now been pinned on the map and we reckon that only 1 in 4 or 5 is registered and ducks have now been found/placed in over 20 countries. Some little ducks have inspired people to join the registers. It did start as a British based project but has taken off worldwide and tags are available in several languages (translators always welcome!) and there are links to international donor sites.
It begun as a knitting, sewing and crochet project (official patterns are on the website) but has morphed and people are using other patterns, and different ways of making them. Someone has even managed to work out a pattern for loombands and there are tiny ones being put in geocache containers.
