Oh that's much better pricing than the one I'd looked at, which was either a swatch too small to be any use for a rug (a saddlecloth, maybe!), or a minimum order of a fat quarter at £14-something. 20cm x 20cm would be big enough for any Julip mould, let alone the pit pony! I'd looked at tweeds but not found any with the right base colour, it's quite a bright mustardy tan and most of them seem to tend more toward brown or khaki. Also I'm reluctant to get anything with real wool in cos of the moth problem, I keep finding things have been totally eaten, including a bit of proper harris tweed I'd bought for another project and had tucked away inside a box - just a few scraps and a lot of moth-caterpillar poo, now!

The ponies are gorgeous and, as you said, well worth the wait. I have got a lot of checked fabrics in a box and I'll have a look for you (I make patchwork quilts!) and see if I have anything similar.

For anyone that is wanting to display their Julips or keep moths away from their rugs etc, I would definitely recommend Vapona Zensect moth balls, they have a very mild lavender smell (unlike those old white moth balls that smelt awful) and they gradually turn from bright orange to white so you know when they need replacing.
They come individually wrapped, so anyone with pets or small children around would have to be careful as they do look a bit like sweets but they are very effective.

I have some fabric that might work... it's taking forever to upload to Flickr, but if you pm me your email address I'll send you the pics, if it's any use to you you're welcome to it 😁
