Apologies for those that have seen this already over on the facbook page but i thought i would post here as well for those not on there (Plus i miss the old forum days and feeling a bit nostalgic). Big thank you to EG as after following her guide i think i now know what i am doing with Flickr !!
Anyway....back in January I won a live auction at an Auction house in Birmingham (it was very exciting) for a job lot of very old Julips, stables and carts in various stages of decay. It wasnt really a bargain but as i had travelled all that way i was determined i wasn't coming home empty handed .
So this is the lot that i won (there was another horse, jumps, dove coat, trailer and some carts not shown here which was a nice surprise). Given the moulds of the horses and the dates that some of these were discontinued i think this lot dates from the mid to late 1960's.

Pretty much everything in the lot needs some TLC so this is my major project for 2020 and given the current situation a bit of Julip relief is really doing wonders.
The first items i restored back in February were the hounds and a very squished fox, these were quite simple repairs in re-attaching feet and tails etc

The fox had some more work done to him and you can see him a little later.
Next up was a scruffy Arab pony with leg problems ( broken wires and leg needing re-attachement).

After (and the fox too, no longer squished and repainted). I tried to do the absolute minumium to him, so he still has some paint rubs and imperfections. His mane and tail were fine he just needed a new forelock so i added a bit of mohair.

Next up was a Heavy Horse, his legs were set solid and unfortunatley would not stand. At some point in the past the moths had a feast on his mane and tail and he was also badly rubbed.

During ( he looks really light here, but its just the lighting). I made some small cuts and adjustments to his legs to enable him to stand unaided.

After - I am really pleased with him, i think he has a lot of character . I really love these old moulds. I kmow they are a bit like marmite but i'm a fan ! I can imagine him in a police horse set up or similar.
I touched up the gaps in his paint work with a sponge, all of these old julips have a very matt look to their paint work so this worked well for him. I haven't made his paint work perfect so you can still see some of the imperfections. He is 50 years + so i wanted him to keep his sense of age.
I also gave him a hogged mane, i did try him with a long mane but it didnt seem right for his character. It is also not quite the right Chestnut colour. His orginal mane and tail from what little was left was a more dark Sierra Chestnut colour, but i dont have any of that at the moment. So this mane and tail are just placed in for now and i will replace them as soon as i can.
