Hi
Can anyone help please ?
I have been given a Julip Original model but it has been drawn all over by, (I think), a permanent marker pen.
Can anyone suggest how I can restore this model, (it looks like it was originally bay), or what type of paint I should use to re-paint him ?
Many thanks

Just my two cents, although I’m sure more experienced people on here would be happy to help you out: I believe most people who restore Julips use acrylic paints: the problem however is that you won’t be able to bend the pony anymore, as the acrylic paint will probably crack.

Would it be possible to only paint over it partially to cover the worst bits i.e. make it pinto or appaloosa (or pintaloosa!) rather than doing an entire repaint?
But yeah, unless you feel like trying to strip it and get hold of proper latex paints then your only choice is really going to be acrylic paint. I like Reeves the best but it's got impossible for me to find that in any actual shops (only online). Some (not all) models I've painted over with that are actually still bendy without cracking but I think it depends mostly on the model itself how it ages and doesn't really have much to do with the top layer of paint at all (I mean I've had Julips that are only a few years old with the original paint whose legs crack really badly too, I think it's a base latex issue rather than a paint issue).
(I do think Daler Rowney Graduate acrylic paint is rubbish despite the fact it's more expensive than other kinds, and 'craft' type acrylics of the type usually sold in those little round bottles will be too thin and often too matte so I don't recommend those)

If it isn't possible to disguise the pen marks and it's a full repaint job, it might be worth trying to remove the pen. Maybe something that's not too harsh. I find micellar water pretty good at stripping paint (I use it to clean my brushes). I got biro pen marks off a julip with this, but it did strip the base coat of paint as well. Also clarins toner is a good cleaner. And as both of these products are actually formulated to use on your face I can't imagine they would do much damage to the actual latex if it didn't work.

Thankyou all for your help. Unfortunately the pen marks are over at least 90% of the body - I think the previous owner decided they wanted him black all over. I will certainly try to 'make him better'. He was, I believe, a mule but his ears have been cropped so he looks more like a pony now. Thanks again for all your help it is very much appreciated.
