A few weeks ago a small herd vintage Julips came to live with me. Star the year-long has one or two cracks and her legs no longer bend, but apart from that she's not too bad. www.flickr.com/photos/182799865@N02/48993135732/in/dateposted-family/Comet the pony had a broken leg, a missing foot and a few chunks missing from her legs. I've made a start on repairing her. I'm not sure how I'm going to paint the new bits! www.flickr.com/photos/182799865@N02/48992387868/in/dateposted-family/Then there is Thunder. Poor old lad has a lot going on. He has some quite nasty cracks, his feet are in dire need of the farrier but what concerns me most is a couple of tacky spots either side of his neck. What do you all think? Can he be helped? Someone did suggest filling the cracks with superglue. I'm not keen on this idea - I frequently glue myself to the desk with pva so I really can't be let loose with superglue. He'd end up permanently attached to my hair! Should I milliput over the cracks? I don't want to fully repaint him as his eyes are gorgeous, and I'd never be able to recreate them... www.flickr.com/photos/182799865@N02/48992935931/in/dateposted-family/Any suggestions gratefully received!

With Comet, when you repaint the new bits, add some yellow to the white base colour so it's not too bright and white and obvious, then when that's done and fully dried cover everything you don't want paint on, then you can add speckles to the new/repaired bits by spattering or flicking paint from an old toothbrush or maybe a stiff paintbrush.
By his appearance and from your description I suspect Thunder might be gummy under the surface and that's why he's cracking up like that. Often the top layer seems to be basically floating on top of the gummy stuff underneath and you get that sort of stretching and splitting open of the top coloured layer as a result and then sticky bits start oozing through. So unless you completely encase him in something solid like milliput he might well end up needing further work sometime in future. Or he could just dry out completely over time, who knows, old latex is not really a predictable substance unfortunately.
Superglue can be good for filling some cracks. You need thick/gel superglue so it doesn't run everywhere. Sprinkling baking soda onto it makes it set very quickly and form a solid thicker layer of material (almost like resin) which can be good for rebuilding small parts and filling gaps. I have used PVA/tacky glue on some Julips too. Although you could just paint in the cracks with acrylic paint and see how he goes over time, he might deteriorate more and need more extensive work sometime in future but on the other hand if you keep him in the right conditions he possibly could stabilise and only need minor touch ups again (if you do that just make sure he's not in close contact with anything you don't want him to stick to, like other Julips, and put paper under his feet so he doesn't stick to whatever he's standing on).

Oh that's fantastic, thank you. I was thinking I'd need to add a bit of yellow when touching up Comet, but I wasn't sure when.
Thunder's sticky bits don't seem as sticky as when he first arrived, so maybe I'll leave him alone for now and see what happens. If he stabilizes I'll just do a few touch ups, if not you'll all see progress reports with asking what to do next!
At the moment Thunder lives in the tack room, naked and well away from anything he might stick to!

Another good thing for repairs is 'Liquid Green Stuff' you can get this from Games Workshop/Warhammer shops, it is a thick paste made from an epoxy putty type of material (Think Milliput but softer), it can be rubbed into cracks to fill them, you will need to repaint once it is dried though as it is bright green.
