Not that long ago I bought a HOTY Moondance from a fellow collector. She was in a sorry state, but that was alright, because I was planning on customising her. She's actually a bit of a side project, but a fun little one to do anyways!
Oddly enough I've actually never ever painted or customised a model before. That's why I didn't go for any complicated colours with lots of shading and dapples. And I guess that's also why I made quite a few beginners mistakes. I for example messed up her base coat a little and I used a fine sponge to add the paint, as I'm not that good at painting with a paint brush without causing stripes. I think both those things are the reason why her coat got a bit of texture to it. It doesn't bother me too much though, as I think it adds character, hehe.
As some of you might now the Moondance mould has an opened mouth. I really don't like the look of that, so one of the first things I did - after giving her a clean and removing her nylon hair - was remove her chin and sculpt a new one with epoxy. I'm quite happy with how that turned out! After that I removed her seem-lines as well as I could and gave her a (messed up) base-coat. I decided to go for a piebald, as I guess it's one of the simplest colours to do. I didn't really plan her markings, but just went along with it. I did know I wanted her to have a blaze and four white legs, so that's something to go with. After that I gave her little pink hooves and a pink nose (which you can't really tell from the photos, but it's quite obvious in person) and painted her eyes. I added a bit of gloss, because I like the way it looks and after that rehaired her with mohair. The glue was still drying when I took these photos, so her hair will need a little more styling once the glue's dry.
I ment to give her a more original name, but whenever I worked on her in my mind I kept calling her Patches. So there we go: here's Wolle's Patches! Both my first custom and my actually my very first HOTY too.
I look forward to hear what you think! If you have any tips on getting a smooth coat using acrylics you're welcome to let me know: I might be able to use you advice for a future project!
