Over this past weekend, I participated in a Live Model Horse Show for the first time in a few years and I decided to bring Willoughby along as my table's mascot. I'm located in the United States, so I figured a lot of people never would have seen a Julip in person before (I never had until I bought Willoughby) and that people would like to look at him. The show was a for horses in mini scale only, so I figured he'd be too big to compete, but he looked very cute on my table! I put a little sign in his mouth that said the name of my "stable" so he made for a very useful mascot haha.
Throughout the day, quite a few people wanted to see him and pick him up, so he was quite a success in that regard. Everyone thought he was adorable and a lot of people asked questions about him. The feature that people seemed the most drawn to was the way he could hold things in his mouth. I thought the bendy legs would be the big hit, but it was his mouth that really interested people for whatever reason. People also looooved his beautiful dapples! A lot of people also asked if I was showing him! I explained that I thought he wasn't really in the right scale to be eligible, but my table-mates pointed out that he really wasn't all that much bigger than a lot of the other horses there so I should take a crack at putting him in a Collectability Class.
I felt a little bad because I had to add him to my horse list like half way through the day which was probably a little annoying to the show hostess, but she said it was okay so I went ahead and put him on the list, wrote him up a tag, jotted down some documentation and put him in the "Other Manufacture Original Finish Collectability Class" along with my other horses that were showing in that and settled in to wait.
It was a pretty big class (29 horses), but my excitement was off the charts when I saw the judge put a ribbon down next to Willoughby! He got Sixth Place and the class not only big, but suuuper competitive. The winning horse was the overall Collectability Champion of the day, so that just goes to show how stiff the competition was. I was so happy that I forgot about my other horses for a minute because I was too busy running back and celebrating Willoughby's ribbon with my table-mates because they were all rooting for him too. In an unexpected twist, when I finally remembered the other horses, I realized two of them had placed too haha.
Anyway, it was a great day and I'm so glad that I wound up being able to show Willoughby after all! Plus it was fun to see so many people experiencing seeing a Julip for the first time. Of all the horses on my table, Willoughby without doubt garnered the most attention!
