This is a long-shot, but I don't suppose anyone knows any magic ways to make Julip mohair repulsive to moths?
Today I found moth-maggots (!!!) wriggling about in my Julips' manes and tails. To say I am unimpressed with the horrible insects is an understatement. The Horsies are now all confined to a big plastic box with moth-kill sachets to decontaminate them, but what do I do in the long run?
I have been trying to find glass-fronted shelving units (the horsies were currently on open shelves), which are apparently like hen's teeth. Current plan is to buy massive sheets of clear acrylic from homebase and try to DIY-it, but I'm not too sanguine that will work. Blasted moth-b*st*rds!

Oh no! I'm always worried in case that happens with my lot as they're all on open shelves too but luckily I've had nothing yet. I don't know of anything that will put them off but maybe see if you can 'decontaminate' your shelves somehow before the ponies go back on them? Oh and just to say, in case anyone goes on a rampage against all moths - there's only one type that'll go for your Julips or clothes - these guys - most moths are perfectly harmless and fluffy and adorable, so leave them alone!

Supposedly lavender deters moths but I don't know if it actually works.

Thanks! And no worries - all other moths get admired, gently corralled into glasses and then ejected into the wild outdoors If they are particularly big and flappy, husband does this job Good idea about the shelves - I'm replacing all the felt items I have with synthetic where possible. I think it's just going to be a case of getting the acrylic and doing my best at the DIY

Since the last rented place we've had big trouble with these. Thankfully this place is more under control than the last place but still a problem. Lavander and peppermint don't work in either oil form or pure form. They even get into cabinets and closed cupboards It's a case of ejecting all moths and maggots you find asap and cleaning everything you find, throw away any contaminated food. That's the only way to control it. You could (if you own your own home) try having laminated or wooden flooringin your model room to reduce it in there and evict any moths you find asap.

I'm not sure how easy it would be to get, but in the museum we use pheromone traps which lures the males to a bit of sticky paper so they don't end up breeding.

Oh no, poor you and poor Julips My Julips are in a locked display cabinet but I'm always aware that the moths can still get in so I use Zen'sect by Vapona. They're like little orange balls in a see through wrapper (they look a bit like sweets) and they change colour to white when the moth proofer is all used up, they have little to no smell even though the packet says they have Lavender fragrance. They only cover up to 0.40 cubic meters so I normally put three into the cabinet, one on each shelf, just to make sure there's enough in there. Theyre very good in an enclosed space like a cabinet but not sure how well they would work on open shelving.

I can't help with the moths but Ikea definitely do some glass fronted shelves - I used to have a big wall mounted set and my dad bought a yellow frame with glass sides the other day.

Thank you all! Lakeland do pheromone traps, and we have loads of them - they definitely catch the moths, so I might get more of them! (Lankland must think we're bonkers - we go in every couple of week and just buy anti-moth stuff!) We have Lakeland's anti moth chemically things, but I'll get some Zensect too. Display cabinets is on the shopping list this weekend so I can build up a decent level of chemically fumes around my precious horsies! On the upside, it's inspired me to sort out the rest of the room, and aside from finding moths in my one pair of wool-based trousers (which didn't fit anyway, so the moths can have them!), the general effect is now much tidier

I have the ikea shelves with the glass doors, they're great. I got them primarily to cut out dusting, so even if they don't work for the moths there's still that benefit!

Thanks for the Ikea tips everyone! We hit Ikea today - the kitchen is fuller (of boxes!) and the bank account is a bit emptier The Julips are currently in sealed boxes with a ton of moth-killer-chemicals, but when I release them, they will have nice shiny new homes to move into!

Oh no! Where I used to live we had a moth problem, and in attempt to catch them we used these little light things that you plug into wall sockets that zap the moths when they fly in. It didn't get rid of them completely, but it helped to control them.

That sounds good, I'll look into that! Thanks!

I never even thought about this... I'm sure we have an equivalent moth across the pond, and now I'm regularly checking my mohaired models! I dream of glass door shelving, but that has to wait until I no longer live in cramped student housing.

You'll probably be ok - my problem started because the house (and its wool carpets!) already had moths when we moved in, and we were slow in binning their carpet banquets!
