To all tackmakers - where do you get the leather (real or faux) to make you tack? I'm almost ready to order my first Julip and I'd love to make it some tack when it arrives

I buy my undyed leather from a - lucky me - very local leathercraft store. I also buy my dye there which is by a brand named 'Tandy Leather'. I only recently found out that Tandy Leather actually has a webstore where they sell leather as well. I know they don't ship to The Netherlands, but I guess they might ship to the UK?

I don't use leather much anymore as I haven't had time for tackmaking, but generally anything made of leather in charity shops - purses, gloves, anything!

Btw, do you recommend getting the real thing or is faux leather enough - like the one that cheaper purses are sometimes made of?

We just got a bin liner full from freecycle! Someone had dismantled an old sofa... Its a touch thick but very supple. You're welcome to a piece to practice with if you're happy to pay postage - same applies to anyone else who'd like some, plenty to go around!

Leather - samples from shops that made leather headboards and sofas. Fake leather from craft fairs and fabric shops It's amazing what you can find in the offcuts/rummage baskets inside the fabric and craft shops The cotton lined Denim over shoulder bag I made only cost me around £2.30 as everything came from offcuts basket.

Fake leather is often better for tack, I find, as the grain is smaller, it tends to be thinner, and is often cheaper too!

and is often cheaper too! I think that's the winning point!

Fake leather does have it's merits but it can be horrible to work with too - I've switched to using real leather for most tack, though I do use some fake leather ribbon for bridles because it's of a kind that doesn't fray or snap.

Another tack-making related question! What glue do you recommend for leather? Cause I don't think anyone is actually sewing everything together in this scale

I always use superglue, anything else is either too weak to hold it firm to start with, or gives up after a year or so letting everything fall apart again! But avoid the liquid version, that will just get all over and leave weird stains on the leather. So you need to make sure you only get the gel kind (either the real Loctite Superglue brand, or the Stanley one - as in Stanley knives - is just as good).

I use bostik, or the unbranded version that's literally exactly the same and packaged in exactly the same colours. XD
