Hi there! As I'm shopping around for some buckles I was wondering about bits: do you make them yourself or buy them from places like Rio Rondo? An ordinary loose ring snaffle or d-ring snaffle is quite easy to make, but what about pelhams, full cheeks and other fancy ironworks? Really curious to know what you guys use or buy. All tips, tricks, thoughts and suggestions (including photos) are welcome!

I tend to make them myself as it's far more rewarding, and much cheaper, too! I use jewellery wire and round ended pliers to bend them into shape.
I know George is a big proponent of paperclips though. XD

Yeah, I use paperclips I find on the floor at work cos I'm too cheap to buy any jewellery wire I don't have pics of many bits I've made, but here's the few I can find : Flint with a paperclip pelham Gandermack the cavalry black, in his military tack! This bit was made with paperclip too, with the addition of a little milliput painted gold for the 'brass' bit bosses at the sides. This one for Tolpuddle was still in progress at the time, but you can see the bit is a full cheek made with a paperclip and a bead - the bends in the wire hold the bit in place and it looks like the end of a mouthpiece. Same again for Merriweather, with a black bead this time to look like a rubber mouth snaffle. Ridiculously OTT Iberian bit for ridiculously OTT Iberian horse Ferdinand The cheeks are made from one paperclip, with a little freely revolving loop at the bottom which is made from a pin - the pin head fitted through a tiny ring in the cheek so it can spin but not pull through the hole. Paperclip bits on the wall in my mini tackroom (except the one on the right, which is from a Julip bridle, the rest are made from bent wire and beads - I actually see one of the roller beads on that pelham has slipped out of place, I better add some tacky wax to hold them away from the port in the middle, heh)

Paperclips... No way! You're my hero! Very, very well done (I especially adore the tack on Flint. That's absolutely gorgeous!). Thanks a lot for the nice photographs, I'm very sure they will be of great help!

There are three theories on how I'm able to make things from paperclips. One is that I do in fact have a secret supply of magic paperclips, and normal ones won't co-operate so well. The second theory is that I have a pair of magic pliers, and it is these and not the paperclips which hold the power. This was tested at a live show once, by someone giving me one of her own paperclips, and it still turning into a bit. The third theory, most recent, is that I may just have magic fingers, and it's nothing to do with the materials or tools. I cannot possibly comment

In essence, you're just magic. I can't even make a paperclip into a ring, let alone a hugely complicated bit!

Yes, that's it. I fully agree with EG!

No, no, no! There is a fourth explanation, Georgie is a Paperclip Whisperer! She can get any unruly piece of wire bend to her slightest will ever since the portentous day when she found a mysterious piece of metal in the middle of Stone Henge one night when it was a Lunar eclipse!

Wow, thanks a lot cookies and whitestones! I do know about Modellpferdeversand and I've ordered apoxie and buckles from them before. Their shipping to the Netherlands is especially fast (like the other day)! I'll surely check out the others.
