Last year, eight of our Julip horses turned forty years old and we missed taking the usual celebratory pics. Better late than never … this is Alexander the Great, better known as “Big Al”. These two are Simon Sashieva (the grey) and The Magenpie. Spring-heeled Jack and the Unicorn, Hilarion … … Sprout, the other Unicorn, with San Severina … … and Haakon the golden Fell. Mmmm. Thirty five horses which we bought by post or from Beauchamp Place have now turned forty years old. How time flies! (Back in 1973, Big Al cost a massive £2.25 plus 43p. For special markings and 17p. Postage. That’s £2.85! Don’t laugh … that was seriously expensive!) Sue & Lesley castlerigg

Love the Fell and the Magenpie is a very traditionally-Julipy Julip somehow

I know what you mean, Elli, but I do think her "badger face" is unusual!

Aww, happy belated fortieth to them all! I seem to remember there being a nice story behind you having unicorns, but can't remember what it was - please could you remind me? (Assuming I've remembered something real and am not just imagining things...!)

Big Al is definitely unique! It's great that you've held on your ponies for so long, and they're in such great condition!

Thanks! Kits, we were doing a display in the local Children's Library on Elizabeth Goodge's book, "The Little White Horse", so we asked Julip to make us an Unicorn from the Welsh Pony mould. Two Unicorns arrived: Hilarion, as requested, with a neat beard ... ... and Sprout, from the Welsh Mountain Pony mould, with ankle-fringes, as well. We bought both. Their horns were not very realistic - latex-covered wire in open spirals, like ring binders. We did a quick conversion, using seashells, and got the display up on time. Sue & Lesley castlerigg2

Aw, thank you for telling the story again! They are both lovely, the details like beard and feathers are charming.

"San Severina (unusual name!) ..."
About then, we were in the habit of naming mares after heroines, mostly from Science Fiction, and mostly tragic. Killashandra, Maelen, Domino, Hsiao Lan, Candy Card ... the list goes on ...

i do always love seeing your unicorns. the sea shell horns are such a lovely touch, they look so magical. big al is great too, i don't recall ever seeing him before! i'm a sucker for the HIA mould and that's the most unusual colour i think i've ever seen on it. happy birthday all!
