... these little strangers appeared at our fireplace, hidden in a burlap sack.
Yes, it's early 'Christmas' presents for me! I'm so incredibly happy with this little pony and adorable pets! The dog and the bunnies are modelled after my own dog and bunnies, which makes the present even more meaningful! <3
Over here in The Netherlands we celebrate the tradition of Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas), based on the patron saint of children. Around mid-November her arrives by steamboat, together with his beloved white horse Amerigo and many generous and lovely Zwarte Pieten. He carries a golden shepherd's staff and a big red book in which is written whether each child has been good or naughty in the past year.
In the period before Sinterklaas eve children put their shoe near a fireplace filled with hay and a carrot and sing a song. Sinterklaas rides his Amerigo over the rooftops and the Pieten climb down the chimneys to exchange the carrot for a tiny present or some candy. If you've been behaving well, of course!
We celebrate the name day of Sinterklaas (on the 6th of December) on the evening before by giving presents and lots of chocolate letters, 'pepernoten', 'speculaas', marzipan and tiny sugary animals. Sinterklaas leaves the presents near the fireplace in a big burlap sack and sometimes adds a cheeky rhyme.
And don't you worry: we celebrate Christmas too. Just without presents, but with lots of food!
Ohh, and yes: I've given them names too! The pony is named Whiskers, the bunnies are Brom and Mies, the dog is Beer ('bear') and the ducks are named Mr. Donald (a classic, my dog's favorite cuddly duck toy is named the same) and Flopsy.
Laura, thank you on doing such a wonderful job once again. I don't even know how you do it, but you amaze me each and every time I open one of your packages. Thank you!
